Joey Wong  MHLP, RN (She/Her/Hers)

I am a PhD candidate at the School of Nursing and a research project manager for several past projects in the UBC IDEA Lab. I also work part-time as a registered nurse at Vancouver Coastal Health and a TA at the School. 

I believe that “Research is a way towards Dreams Come True”. I am passionate about bringing positive changes to the community and healthcare through creativity, collaboration, innovation, and technology.

I appreciate the expertise everyone brings to the table and enjoy teamwork, especially when I work with people who share similar visions and values. When people are passionate, they are devoted to their work and push the team going forward. People’s passion and energy motivate me. That’s why I love working at IDEALab and on my current PhD project!

My PhD project focuses on co-designing a culturally sensitive virtual reality (VR) dementia care education tool for nursing students. Together with my advisory group, community members from the Chinese and Filipino communities, nursing students, and educators, we are exploring a co-design process to build a tech tool that nurtures future nurses in dementia care. Besides academic work, I also enjoy working in community projects. Over the years, I have collaborated with older adult partners and fellow students on community initiatives, including a project to explore how to make the UBC Vancouver campus more age-friendly, a community Ukulele project for older adults living with cognitive impairment and their family partners and an outdoor Pilates class for students living in the Acadia Park community on campus!

I would like to thank everyone and all the funders who have supported and mentored me throughout the journey, believed in my ideas, and helped make them work together! I am very curious about how my future will unfold!

Fun fact: I am also passionate about cats and dim sum!
